BEAVER HALL MOMENTS

EDWIN HOLGATE
"Portrait of Jackrabbit, (The Skier)," c.1936, by Edwin Holgate (Montreal Museum of Fine Arts). Jackrabbit, Holgate's friend, cut the first cross-country ski trails in the Laurentians.

MABEL LOCKERBY
“Marie and Minou” by Mabel Lockerby which received honourable mention in the Willingdon Arts Competition and in 1929 was acquired by the National Gallery. Governor General Jeanne Sauve personally chose it for her official residence.

EDWIN HOLGATE
“Contemplation”, 2006, Canadian postage stamp by Edwin Holgate. In 1946, feeling out of touch with the new generation of artists, he left Montreal for Morin Heights, a village in the Laurentians, where he painted and gave art lessons.

PRUDENCE HEWARD
"The Skier", c.1939, (University of Toronto) by Prudence Heward. Unconstrained by financial need, she could choose not to flatter her subjects and rarely identify them, often referring to them as her "figures" rather than "portraits".

A.Y. JACKSON
“Père Raquette”, c.1921, (McMichael) by A.Y. Jackson who was poking fun at the nickname first given to him by Edwin Holgate because of his insistence on using old-fashioned snowshoes rather than skis.
